Asad Qaiser, the senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stated on Monday that the independent candidates endorsed by the PTI who backed the controversial constitutional amendment had abandoned the party and its founder, Imran Khan.
The government was able to get 225 of the 224 votes needed with the crucial assistance of a few independent MNAs, including those supported by the PTI.
The PTI-backed MNAs who voted in favor of the change were Zahoor Qureshi, Aurangzeb Khichi, Usman Ali, and Mubarak Zeb. Chaudhry Ilyas of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) also endorsed the proposal.
The chief justice of Pakistan will henceforth be chosen by a parliamentary committee and serve a set term of three years, as per the judicial changes agreed during a late-night session of parliament. Additionally, a new constitutional bench will be established.
During a television appearance, Qaiser declared, “Those who voted [in favor of the bill] were guilty of treachery against the party and Imran Khan.”
Qaiser, a former lower house speaker, emphasized that the votes cast were against party doctrine, saying, “These weren’t their votes, they were votes for Imran Khan.”
He charged that in enacting the measure, the administration disregarded parliamentary norms and procedures. “The federal government failed to adhere to the proper regulations and procedures for this bill,” he said.
The former National Assembly speaker further said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was not adequately represented in the Senate and that the events in the Parliament were illegal.
