Renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil has questioned the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) decree that labeled Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as haram.
Recently Maulana Tariq Jamil appeared in an interview of a local TV channel. During the interview the scholar opened up about the ICC’s new Fatwa.
“If VPNs are deemed “haram,” then mobile phones should also be considered haram as they are used to access similar restricted content”, Maulana claimed.
Maulana said that mobile phones are more harmful than VPN as they pose even greater risks, allowing access to inappropriate material.
Tariq Jmeel warned that such kind of decrees mirroring narrow mindedness can cause serious consequences.
Previously CII’s declared the use of VPN haram, citing concerns over its use to bypass internet censorship and access prohibited content.
CII chairman Allama Dr. Raghib Naeemi, stated that positive use of VPN in the country is minimal. He said that it is mostly used to get an access to the immoral content containing pornography and blasphemous material. Therefore, he called for VPN users to register their services to ensure traceability and promote responsible use.
