Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has initiated a comprehensive plan to restore Lahore’s prominence as a center for film and arts by establishing a 29-member steering committee.
This committee’s mission is to tackle challenges in the film industry and reignite Lahore’s cinematic heritage, with the goal of creating a thriving future for artists in Punjab.
Former federal minister Pervaiz Rashid will represent Maryam on the committee, while Senior Minister Mariyam Aurangzeb will serve as convener.
Key members include Punjab Information Minister Azma Bohari and top provincial officials from the information, tourism, and finance departments, alongside notable figures from the film and arts sectors.
The committee’s responsibilities include developing a modern infrastructure for film production in Punjab, establishing a Punjab Film Fund to provide financial support, and proposing incentives for sector growth.
Their plans include constructing a state-of-the-art film city, a film academy, and a high-tech film lab.
Maryam Nawaz has instructed the committee to submit detailed recommendations within 15 days, with a strong focus on artist welfare.
The plan includes an artist welfare system that will offer health insurance, social security, and other benefits to support Punjab’s artist community.
Additionally, the committee aims to create spaces for artistic expression, encourage emerging talent, and increase cinema venues across the province to support local films.
Special investor incentives are also under consideration to expand cinema infrastructure and stimulate business within the film industry.
In a recent Punjab Cabinet meeting, Maryam Nawaz approved an increase in the grant for the Artist Service Card, expanding support for artists. The new policy aims to provide both financial and social backing, fostering a secure environment for artists in Punjab.
