Woman handshake with man in Islam is prohibited in any circumstances, as per majority of Muslim scholars.
As per Islamicity website, a woman cannot shake hand with na-mahram man and similarly a man cannot do the same.
According to an article titled: The Law behind Muslim Women’s handshake written by Mahmoud El-Yousseph a woman can handshake with ten type of people. These are 1-the father 2. the grandfathers 3. brothers 4-the husband 5-the sons, stepsons 6-the son-in-law 7-the uncles 8-the father-in-law 9-the nephews 10-the close relatives.
Known religious scholar Dr Zakir Naik who recently visited Pakistan on an official tour has also declared man handshake with woman as prohibited.
In a famous Youtube video which his team posted on the app three months before, Dr Zakir made clear remarks on the topic. Quoting Hadith of Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), he said a man could not shake hand with woman even if the latter is wearing gloves.
As per dar-alifta Egypt, handshake between man and woman is one of controversial issues in Islamic jurisprudence. The majority of scholars say shaking hands between the sexes is unlawful. However, Hanafis and Hanbalis permit shaking hands with elderly women who do not arouse desire.
Na-Mahram in Islam
Mahram, as per Islamic law, comes from the word “Haram”, meaning sacred or prohibited. Mahram means a person who you are not allowed to marry. Islamic laws allowed mahram to see woman without a headscarf and shake their hands and hug them if the latter likes it. Na-mahram means it is not Haram to marry. Woman would observe hijab in front of a non-mahram.
The controversy:
Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz handshake with Dubai ruler has generated the fresh controversy on social media. Dubai President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan along with some other high-officials is on haunting trip in Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and her niece Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab, has received him at Shaikh Zayed International Airport at Rahim Yar Khan. Maryam shook hand of the Dubai ruler with both of her hands. The picture went viral and people are commenting on it, referring Islamic traditions that she should avoid it.
