Maryam Nawaz etched her name in the annals of Pakistani politics, becoming the first woman to be elected Chief Minister of Punjab.
The historic ceremony took place at the Governor’s House in Lahore, with Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman administering the oath of office.
Witnessing this momentous occasion were her father, Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), her party president uncle Shahbaz Sharif, and her son Junaid Safdar.

In her inaugural address, Maryam Nawaz, the newly elected Chief Minister of Punjab, affirmed her commitment to a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption, pledging to implement an efficient governance model for timely project completion and exemplary services. She outlined ambitious plans to upgrade basic health units across the province and establish state-of-the-art hospitals in every district, even announcing the launch of Pakistan’s first air ambulance service in the coming days.
The victory of PML-N, led by three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in the recent national election, played a crucial role in forming the government, with Maryam securing the position as the first woman chief minister of Punjab. Her journey from involvement in the Sharif family’s philanthropic organizations to becoming the senior vice president of PML-N has been marked by political challenges, making her candidacy a significant milestone in Pakistan’s political history.
Expressing gratitude to party leadership, including Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, at 50, declared herself the Chief Minister of the whole province, promising no vendetta against anyone and envisioning Punjab as a successful business hub.
