Pakistani film star and superstar Mahira Khan recently shared her journey with mental health. She shared the dark times when she struggled with depression.
During a podcast with Amina Haider, she requested anyone feeling low must seek professional help.
Reflecting on her struggles, Mahira explained that while it’s easy to discuss mental health on the surface, diving into its depths is much harder.
She emphasized her difficult period of life and said I was, really, really depressed. She stated further it was challenging to explain how overwhelming her life had become.
She stated “This is not a normal situation you can talk about, it’s a disease. It’s a chemical imbalance.” She acknowledged that while triggers exist, depression and other mental health issues are illnesses that require proper treatment from specialists, including medications and therapy.
Mahira revealed that medication was instrumental in her recovery during her toughest times, along with a strong support system that included her faith. She expressed her gratitude towards her family, close friends, and her son who never left her side during her darkest moments.
“A support system is very, very important.” She urged, again the need to talk openly about issues like depression, which are often ignored.
The star shared that many people seek her advice and ask for guidance on mental health she has always referred many people to therapists and psychiatrists stressing the importance of removing shame associated with mental health challenges.
Mahira also reflected on recognizing her own triggers and making personal growth a priority balancing her maternal responsibilities. Post-marriage, she traveled, spent quality time with friends, and learned the value of taking breaks.
She encouraged women to engage in activities that bring them joy, whether gardening, cooking, or watching dramas. Mahira concluded that whatever makes you happy, do it. There’s no age for joy and self-care.
