On Friday, the apex committee of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa decided to destroy every bunker in Kurram District.
In Kurram, where law and order have been disrupted by weeks-long tribal fighting, this move is an attempt to restore calm.
Since last month, the skirmishes have resulted in at least 130 fatalities, significant displacement, and several injuries.
An attack on a convoy that left at least forty-three persons dead sparked the mayhem. The violence has caused serious shortages of food and medicine, according to residents of Kurram, which borders Afghanistan.
Long-standing tribal conflicts over land issues that date back decades are difficult for the authorities to settle. The district is riven by violence, and a jirga is working to maintain lasting peace.
The apex committee, headed by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, also ordered the removal of heavy weaponry.
After the meeting, a declaration said that “for enduring peace, bunkers and weapons must be eliminated.” The high-level conference to discuss the problem was also attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
