The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration on Sunday changed the timings of schools in the province owing to the intense heat, as heatwaves continue to suffocate many regions of the nation.
Instead of opening at 8 am, schools in the KP will now open at 7 am. Primary school students will dismiss at 11 a.m., while middle, high, and secondary schools will conclude at 12 p.m.
In a statement, the KP Education Department stated that “school timings have been changed due to extreme heat.”
In addition, the government has declared that elementary schools would have summer breaks from June 1 to August 31.
Secondary schools (middle, high, and higher) will be closed from June 15 to August 31.
The Education Department did note that students in comparatively colder climates will have their summer break from July 1 to August 31.
The declaration from the KP government comes a few days after Punjab declared a seven-day school break due to extreme heat.
The vacations were declared by Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar in a post on X. The minister distributed a notice informing everyone that from May 25 to May 31, all public and private schools would be closed.
We have chosen to provide the holidays starting this week, he stated, taking into account the opinions of the parents and the severity of the weather.
The government also changed the hours that schools are open from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Fridays.
However, the All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association (APPSMA), which requested permission to enable the schools to operate between 7am and 10am from June 1 to June 15, disputed the provincial government’s proclamation of summer holidays in the province from June 1 to August 14.
The notification that the intermediate examinations will be postponed for five days by the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) came next.
Exams were originally planned to start on May 22, but they will now start on May 27 (tomorrow).
