Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies has been officially nominated as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards.
During a recent interview with Press Trust of India on September 21, Rao expressed her excitement, stating, “It has always been my aspiration for Laapataa Ladies to reach the Oscars. I remain hopeful that our film will be acknowledged, but it’s a competitive process. Ultimately, I trust the Film Federation of India will make the right choice.”
Rao emphasized that the true measure of success lies in audience reception. “Recognition from the viewers at the box office is what truly matters. If our film resonates with people and garners appreciation, that will be our greatest achievement,” she added.
In a heartfelt message on her Instagram, Rao conveyed her gratitude for the selection, stating, “I am incredibly honored that Laapataa Ladies has been named India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. This achievement reflects the hard work and passion of my entire team, who brought this narrative to life. Cinema has the unique ability to unite people, cross cultural barriers, and inspire vital discussions. I hope this film resonates with global audiences just as it has with viewers in India.”
Rao also thanked the selection committee and acknowledged the impressive lineup of Indian films in contention this year, noting the privilege of being chosen among such worthy competitors.
The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.
The plot centers on two brides whose paths intertwine while traveling to their new homes, leading them on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
