Due to a month-long boycott movement over US backing for Israel’s assault in Gaza, the American fast food company Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was forced to close more than 100 of its locations in Malaysia.
Chinese media reports indicate that QSR Brands, the company that owns KFC, was forced to temporarily close 108 of its 600 locations around Malaysia, the most of which are in the state of Kelantan, which has a mainly Muslim population.
In a statement, QSR Brands said that the company contributes “positively to the Malaysian economy through job security for 18,000 team members in Malaysia, of which, approximately 85 percent are Muslims” and cited “challenging economic conditions” for the closures.
The company also said that employees had been given the option to relocate to busier stores.
A worldwide campaign supporting boycotts, divestitures, and economic sanctions against Israel is known as Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS).
The national boycott movement in the nation of Muslims is focusing on KFC as the latest American fast-food chain to be targeted because of US support for Israel in the midst of its ongoing assault on Gaza.
