Every year on February 5th, millions of people in Pakistan and around the world observe Kashmir Solidarity Day.
This day is dedicated to expressing support for the people of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir in their ongoing struggle for self determination and freedom.
It is a day of reflection, unity, and hope for the resolution of one of the longest-standing disputes in modern history.
The Kashmir conflict started on 1947 when British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan.
The beautiful state of Jammu and Kashmir, located at the crossroads of south and central Asia, became a point of contention.
Over the decades, the region has witnessed numerous wars, uprisings, and a heavy military presence with countless lives affected.
UN has passed resolutions affirming the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination through polling.
However, these resolutions remain just resolutions on papers, leaving millions in a state of uncertainty and hardship.
Kashmir Solidarity Day is more than just a symbolic gesture, it is a reminder of the international community’s moral and ethical responsibility towards the people of Kashmir.
On this day, Pakistanis and supporters worldwide express unity and raise awareness by seminars, rallies and conferences, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution.
Special prayers are held in mosques, asking for the well being and freedom of the Kashmiri people.
Life of Kashmiri people:
Life in Indian Jammu and Kashmir is marked by restrictions, curfews, and frequent internet shutdowns.
Reports of human rights violations, including detentions, and excessive use of force, continue to surface.
The revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which granted special autonomy to Jummu and Kashmir, has further escalated tensions in the region.
For then, The day serves as a piece of hope, reminding them that their struggle is not forgotten.
It also serves as a call to action for the international community to play an active role in addressing the crisis.
