Indian actress Kani Kusruti made a significant statement at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France on Thursday during the premiere of “All We Imagine as Light.” On the red carpet, she carried a unique handbag shaped like a watermelon, symbolizing her support for the Palestinian people.
The watermelon has become an emblem of the Palestinian flag and a sign of solidarity with Palestinians. For the first time in thirty years, an Indian film, “All We Imagine as Light,” directed by Payal Kapadia, has been selected for the Cannes Film Festival. The film’s world premiere received an eight-minute standing ovation and has been lauded for its innovative and emotional storytelling, highlighting urban connections and unexpected sisterhood.
The film is in contention for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. Kusruti’s gesture of support for Palestine comes amid ongoing violence in Gaza and criticism of Hollywood celebrities for their silence on the issue.
