Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Secretary General of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and member of the National Assembly, has stated that his party would not back Justice Qazi Faez Isa in the current constitutional revision process.
This position was stated by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor during a casual conversation with reporters at Parliament House.
Judge Qazi Faez Isa’s ruling in the Mubarak Sani case was criticized by Abdul Ghafoor, who said that it was “deliberately” meant to offend a lot of Muslims.
He clarified that public pressure was the only reason the judgment was overturned.
“How can we endorse such a person in constitutional changes?” Abdul Ghafoor asked some questions.
Concerning the government’s hurry in moving forward with constitutional reforms, the JUI-F leader also stated that coalition parties were not appropriately consulted.
“We proposed negotiations on the changes, but the initial version was shared with us behind an oath of confidentiality,” he stated.
Abdul Ghafoor went on to draw attention to the lack of openness in the legislative process, especially with relation to the government’s draft’s abuses of human rights.
He pointed out that the authorities did not take the process seriously, despite the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) request to view the draft prior to starting discussions.
In response to questions on the current constitutional court dispute, Abdul Ghafoor stated that JUI-F will decide on its position after obtaining the official draft and having a chance to read over its contents.
He went on to say that in exchange for political posts such as governorships, his party will not compromise on ideals.
