United States President Joe Biden recognized the distress within the Arab American community concerning the Gaza war and U.S. support for Israel’s military actions, which has stirred anger and disappointment among Arabs, Muslims, and anti-war activists.
Many Muslims and Arabs in the U.S. have urged the democratic president to advocate for a permanent ceasefire, halt weapon sales to Israel, and exert more pressure to safeguard civilian lives amidst the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
In a proclamation for Arab American Heritage Month released by the White House, Biden expressed his sorrow for the suffering and acknowledged the pain felt by many in the Arab American community due to the Gaza conflict.
However, shortly after Biden’s statement, reports emerged that his administration approved additional weaponry and warplanes for Israel, raising concerns given Israel’s status as the top recipient of U.S. foreign aid.
Despite ongoing protests in several U.S. cities demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, including near landmarks and in front of government buildings, Biden has faced criticism from demonstrators and risked losing support from Arab and Muslim Americans if their demands are not met.
