Jamia Naeemia has published a fatwa which states that “dunki” or illegal immigration practice is strictly forbidden in Islam.
More than 50 people, including 44 Pakistanis, lost their lives in an invident while trying to cross the sea to reach Spain.
The tragedy occurred on January 2, when a boat carrying 86 migrants—66 of them were Pakistanis—left Mauritania.
In the 13 days it spent at sea, the ship encountered extreme hardship and did not receive any form of emergency aid.
Moroccan officials managed to save 36 survivors on Wednesday, but many more perished.
Walking Borders CEO Helena Maleno confirmed the deaths of forty-four Pakistanis and termed their experience extremely painful.
Dr. Mufti Raghib Hussain Naeemi and Mufti Imran Hanafi signed the fatwa, decrying the attempt at illegal migration. It decrees that Sharia and the law reject such an act.
The scholars highlighted that Islam prohibits one from doing something that can cause harm or even lead to death.
According to the fatwa, “Islam strictly forbids suicide and acts that lead to it.”
Moreover, Jamia Naeemia advised people to travel abroad through safe and legal means.
Agents were condemned for helping people embark on illegal immigration for money.
Harsh legislation was demanded by the fatwa to punish corrupt agents and protect citizens from harsh business practices.
Academics pointed out that people should not risk their lives for uncertain results. They suggested that the government should raise public awareness and offer safer alternatives to people.
Jamia Naeemia believes that this fatwa would discourage dangerous activities and encourage safe alternatives.
