Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has ended the sit-in protest in Rawalpindi after successful negotiations with the government.
Led by JI Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, the JI workers have held sit-in at Muree Road for 14-day under “Haq Du Aawam Ko” movement. Their demands included review in IPPs agreements, reduction in electricity tariff and taxes on salaried class, and imposition of taxes on vast land holders.
The JI and the government committees held series of talks during last two weeks and at last agreed on several points.
The members of the JI committee included JI vice-emir Liaqat Baloch, JI secretary general Amirul Azim, deputy secretary general Syed Farasat Ali Shah and JI emir of Islamabad chapter Nasrullah Randhawa. Federal interior minister Mohsin Naqvi, information minister Ata Tarar and advisor to prime minister Shahbaz Warriach represented the government side.
The government will review agreements with the IPPs, decrease taxes and electricity tariff and impose taxes on agriculture land. It also agreed to reduce non-developmental expenditure, insiders say.
Later, the JI Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman addressed the gathering and said the JI would now started nationwide movement for reforms. He announced the agenda of the peaceful resistance movement, saying the JI would lead the movement for electoral and land reforms.
The JI, he said, organised peaceful sit-in for 14-day, presenting example for others that the results could be achieved with commitment.
Rehman earlier held a press conference, holding the rulers responsible for the plight of the people. He said the ruling parties came to power after massive rigging, on the basis of Form-47.
The JI, he said, would make no compromise on the demands of the people and continue struggle for their relief.
Meanwhile, the JI also concluded sit-in in Karachi. The leaders of the JI thanked the people for the support.
