The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) stated that the underwater cable that was causing the services to deteriorate was expected to be repaired by early October, meaning that the current internet outages throughout the nation are probably going to last for more than a month.
Netizens and the information technology (IT) industry were highly critical of the internet disruptions, blaming the current slowdown and restricted connectivity on the alleged testing of an internet firewall to control social media.
The firewall is designed to filter out unwanted content from reaching a larger audience.
The PTA last week attributed the internet outage on “two of the seven international submarine cables linking Pakistan internationally” being malfunctioning.
The telecommunications regulator stated in a statement that two underwater cable faults were the primary cause of the current internet interruption.
According to developments, the SMW-4 underwater cable problem should be fixed by early October 2024.
“Whereas submarine cable AAE-1 has been restored which may improve internet experience,” the statement continued.
PTA Chairman Maj Gen (retd) Hafeezur Rehman said earlier this month that the National Firewall System (NFS) or Web Management System (WMS) was being upgraded in accordance with executive or judicial orders to restrict or remove information from social media.
