Bangladesh’s army chief Wakeruz Zaman stated on Monday during a press conference that he will form an interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position.
According to an AFP calculation based on police, government sources, and hospital physicians, since late July, Bangladesh has been engaged in demonstrations and violence that have cost the lives of at least 300 people overall.
In a national broadcast on state television, Waker declared, “We will form an interim government,” and she also announced Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
“We have chosen to create an interim administration following productive discussions with all major parties. According to the army leader, “We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation,” as reported by Bangladesh’s Dhaka Tribune.
Hasina has reportedly gone to India, according to a number of media sources, including the BBC and Reuters. Cheering demonstrators rushed her palace as she left, marking the end of almost a month of violent anti-government demonstrations.
The images also showed protesters in Dhaka scaling a big statue of Hasina’s father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and starting to chip away at the head with an axe.
One day after almost 100 people were killed in horrific riots throughout the nation, student activists had called for a march to the capital city of Dhaka on Monday in violation of a statewide curfew in an effort to pressure Hasina to step down. Last month, there were about 150 protest-related deaths.
