One day after being granted bail in a protracted corruption case, an Indian court on Friday halted the release of one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s main opponents from custody, according to reports.
Chief Minister of Delhi and head of the opposition Aam Aadmi party, Arvind Kejriwal, refutes the accusations, calling them a “political conspiracy” by Modi and his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Amidst the weeks-long general election in India, he was taken out of custody to campaign, but he was re-incarcerated as the vote concluded this month.
His parole was approved late on Thursday by a trial judge, but the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the nation’s top economic crimes investigating agency, filed an appeal with the Delhi High judge on Friday before he could leave custody.
According to local media, it put a hold on his release until it made a decision about the appeal.
The legal news outlet Live Law said on social networking platform X that the ruling may be made in “two-three days.”
One of the opposition leaders in India, Kejriwal is being investigated criminally for a number of corruption-related cases. According to Modi’s opponents, the prime is using these investigations to undermine any prospective rivals.
The 55-year-old has served as the chief minister of Delhi, which is home to the nation’s capital, New Delhi, for over ten years.
He first gained popularity as an anti-corruption activist, but after his administration legalized the sale of alcoholic beverages in 2021, it was also charged with graft.
His party is a significant player in the opposition INDIA alliance, which is headed by the main opposition Congress party. The Congress party surprised observers and pollsters by winning the election and denying Modi’s BJP the majority of seats in parliament.
