Former prime minister Imran Khan has offered a conditional apology for the widespread protests and violence that occurred on May 9, 2023 if any member of party found guilty.
He urged for the release of CCTV video to confirm PTI members’ involvement in the events.
“If any PTI members are discovered guilty of participating in the events of May 9, I will apologize remove them from the party, and ensure they face repercussions,” Imran said during a casual meeting with media.
He insisted that responsibility be applied uniformly, querying why only the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) is regarded in high esteem.
I was pulled by the Rangers, but there appears to be little regard for Pakistan’s most popular figure, both domestically and globally. “Don’t I deserve apologies as well?” He talked on his own treatment throughout the protests.
The remark underscores continued tensions between the PTI and state authorities, as the PTI leader continues to question the official story of the May 9 occurrences.
The push for openness and accountability is likely to spark additional political controversy in Pakistan.
Earlier, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed the military’s steadfast response to the May 9 violent demonstrations.
He stressed that anyone who participated in the rioting must be held responsible.
