Over the previous five years, Parliament House renovations have cost over Rs 927 million, according to information released by the Interior Ministry on Thursday. A written document that was submitted to the National Assembly described this significant expense in detail, along with the yearly expenses related to renovating and preserving the ancient parliamentary building.
The statement from the government claims that annual spending on Parliament House repairs has changed. An expenditure of Rs 108 million was incurred on renovations during the 2019-20 fiscal year. In 2020–21, this amount rose dramatically to over Rs 171 million. Even more money was spent on improvements in 2021–2022, with Rs 286 million set aside for the purpose. The most significant sum was spent in 2022–2023 (up to Rs 302 million). Rs 60 million has already been spent on ongoing rehabilitation initiatives for the current fiscal year, 2023–24.
It was announced in 2022 that Parliament House will get an extra Rs 5 billion for the 2022–2023 budget year. This increased revenue was distributed under a number of headings, including personnel pay, operating costs, and allowances, in recognition of the substantial financial outlay necessary to maintain the legislative facilities.
The Senate, the Upper House of the Pakistani Parliament, and the National Assembly, the Lower House, are its two chambers. To offset the growing expenses of their operations and maintenance, both houses have received more funding than in prior fiscal years. This additional financing demonstrates how crucial it is to maintain the integrity and efficiency of the nation’s legislative center.
