At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Arshad Nadeem has secured a landmark victory for Pakistan by winning the gold medal in men’s javelin with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters.
This historic achievement marks the end of Pakistan’s 32-year quest for an Olympic gold medal, making it the country’s first individual gold and the first medal in track and field events.
In the opening round of the javelin final, both Nadeem and India’s champion Neeraj Chopra faced difficulties, with Nadeem’s first attempt being invalidated and Chopra committing a foot fault. Grenada’s Anderson Peters set the early lead with a throw of 87.87 meters.
Nadeem turned the tide in the second round with a throw of 92.97 meters, establishing a new Olympic record and taking the lead. Chopra, who threw 89.45 meters, trailed behind Nadeem.
The third round saw Peters fail to improve his earlier mark, while Nadeem achieved a throw of 88.72 meters, the best of the round. Chopra’s attempt also fell short, but Nadeem maintained his leading position.
In the final round, Nadeem delivered a throw of 91.79 meters, further securing his top spot and clinching the gold medal. Chopra, struggling to match his previous performance, settled for the silver with an 89.45-meter throw.
Peters rounded out the podium with a bronze medal for his throw of 88.54 meters, marking his first Olympic medal.
