Israeli officials have announced the death of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, who was among the top figures on Israel’s most-wanted list.
Sinwar was reportedly instrumental in orchestrating the attacks that took place on October 7.
Israel’s president condemned Sinwar’s actions, characterizing them as dedicated to terror and chaos throughout the Middle East.
In a separate incident, local sources reported that an Israeli airstrike on a school being used as a shelter in Jabalia resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals. Israeli authorities claimed the facility was utilized as a gathering place for Hamas and Islamic Jihad members, a claim that Hamas has denied.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Sinwar was killed in an operation conducted in southern Gaza on Wednesday, following a prolonged search that lasted nearly a year. Discrepancies in the reporting of his death’s timing have not been clarified.
The IDF stated that Sinwar was directly involved in the planning and execution of the October 7 attacks, contributing to the murder and kidnapping of numerous Israelis.
They claimed that he had been evading capture while hiding among civilians and in Hamas tunnels throughout Gaza.
The Israeli military confirmed ongoing operations in southern Gaza based on intelligence suggesting the presence of senior Hamas officials, with the 828th Brigade allegedly identifying and eliminating three individuals, including Sinwar.
