“Gulf of Mexico” will be renamed as “Gulf of America” by the United States Geographic Names System (GNIS) and Google Maps.
A spokesperson for Google explained that the company routinely updates names in alignment with official government sources. It aims to ensure its consistency with US geographic designations.
The name change will be displayed in the U.S. user interface. Nevertheless the term ” Gulf of Mexico ” will not change in Mexico.
Google Maps in other countries
In other countries, in Google Maps, both names will be shown at the same time.
Trump administration has changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America.
Moreover, they have renamed Alaska Denali as Denali National Park and Preserve.
The Department of Interior finally made a formal declaration of the Gulf of Mexico. It will now be referred to as the Gulf of America.
The name of this “king of the mountains”, (Denali in the form of a mountain in North America’s tallest summit) was changed to Mount McKinley.
These changes were included in a series of executive orders. These were put in place, by President Donald Trump, soon after assuming office on January 20.
These choices achieved campaign pledges for restoring traditional names connected with American past.
The shift reverses a 2015 order by former President Barack Obama to rename Mount McKinley Denali, a name historically applied by Alaska Natives.
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” was used as a political justification of its economic importance for the US.
The executive order noted its vital importance to oil, fishing and tourism sectors.
Afterwards, the US Coast Guard started to use the “Gulf of America” term in all official communications.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also used the term during a recent winter storm.
Moreover, Google Maps confirmed to make a similar update for its users all over the world.
