Pakistan’s ODI and T20I head coach Gray Kirsten has resigned from his post. Kristen was appointed as head coach in April 2024.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Kristen for a two-year contract but he barely lasted for six months in the role.
According to the media, a public statement will be released very soon. Intense tension was seen between newly appointed coaches Gary Kirsten, Jason Gillespie, and PCB.
The dispute began when the PCB removed input in selecting players, instead giving the whole responsibility to the new selection committee.
Surprised by the decision, Jason Gillespie stated that he felt like a match-day analyst, he initially didn’t agree to this.
Gray Kirsten was not happy with the recent changes. He was not in the country when Mohammad Rizwan was appointed as the new limited-overs captain. Only PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and selection committee member Aaqib Javed were present at the press conference.
PCB introduced a new selection panel when Pakistan lost the first test against England. The panel included Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheema.
Aaqib Javed, one of the main figures in the committee, even inspired new white-ball captain Rizwan to call their play style “Aaqib-ball” during the Test.
Kirsten’s departure, especially after just months of joining, is a surprising turn for Pakistan cricket.
Previously, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi spoke about hiring “the best in class” coaches. Mohsin even approached high-profile candidates like Shane Watson and Daren Sammy before selecting Kirsten to lead the white-ball team.
