The government announced a goal of producing 33.58 million tons of wheat from 10.368 million hectares of land during the Rabi Season of 2024–2025.
The Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research (MNF&R), Rana Tanveer Hussain, presided over a meeting of the Federal Committee of Agriculture (FCA) for the Rabi season during which the decision was reached.
According to him, the committee set production goals for Rabi Crops (2025–2025) and evaluated Kharif Crops (2025–25) performance.
A senior official stated that in order to achieve self-sufficiency, the government suggested a goal area of 10.368 million hectares for the production of 33.58 million tons of wheat.
The provinces did, however, set lower production goals. The goal area for wheat, as proposed by the provincial administrations, will be 9.263 million hectares, with a yield of 27.92 million tons.
He said that in order to satisfy the federal government’s aims and guarantee a sufficient supply of wheat for the next year, the meeting asked the provincial governments to put appropriate measures into place.
In addition, the FCA established output goals for a number of other commodities, including chilies (56.8 thousand tons), tomatoes (658.7 thousand kilograms), onions (2.55 million tons), potatoes (6.83 million tons), and gram (419.4 thousand tons).
According to the official, the meeting also examined Kharif Crops’ performance in 2024–2025 and learned that the production of sugarcane is expected to reach 85.5 million tons from 1.193 million hectares in 2024–2025, which represents an increase of 4.3 percent and 11.5 percent in area and production, respectively, over the FCA’s targets.
As per him, 2024–2025 rice production is expected to reach 9.079 million tons from an area of 3.630 million hectares, representing an 18.5 percent growth in area and a 4.0 percent rise in production over the FCA’s targets.
