Tim Walberg, a republican congressman representing Michigan’s 5th congressional district since 2023, has sparked controversy with recent comments suggesting a nuclear bombing of Gaza, akin to Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
These remarks were made during a gathering with constituents in Dundee, Michigan, drawing significant backlash.
In a recorded clip, Walberg prioritized support for Israel over humanitarian aid to Gaza, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution in Israel’s favor, given its status as a critical ally. He was quoted saying, “It should be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Get it over quick.”
Walberg also advocated for similar support to Ukraine in its conflict with Russian forces since 2022, stressing the goal of swiftly dismantling Vladimir Putin’s regime. However, he clarified that the focus shouldn’t solely be on humanitarian aid amidst ongoing conflict.
Despite facing criticism, Walberg defended his stance, asserting that his comments were misinterpreted and taken out of context. He explained that he used a metaphor to underscore the urgency for Israel and Ukraine to achieve victory swiftly, without endorsing the use of nuclear weapons.
In response to the controversy, Walberg affirmed his beliefs and support for allies, despite the debate reigniting discussions on the appropriate response to conflicts and the balance between military action and humanitarian aid.
