Following his loss in the European Union vote by Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved his cabinet and scheduled unexpectedly legislative election on Sunday, according to the Guardian.
Significant political instability has resulted from this judgment in France, providing the far-right with an opportunity to seize actual governmental power.
The 46-year-old Emmanuel Macron has called for lower house elections on June 30 and a second-round vote on July 7 in response to the depressing EU outcome.
Macron would have limited influence over domestic matters if Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party were to secure a legislative majority.
In a speech to the country, Macron stated, “This is a crucial time for clarification.” “I’ve heard your message and your worries, and I promise to respond to them. For France to act in peace and concord, a clear majority is required.”
Exit surveys showed that the RN, led by the charismatic 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, garnered around 32% of the vote on Sunday, which was more than twice as much as the Macron ticket’s 15% share. With 14% of the vote, the Socialists narrowly trailed Macron, according to Reuters.
In 2022, Macron was re-elected. He cannot stand again, as his present term expires in the spring of 2027.
Following the announcement of the forecasts, Bardella was the first to urge Macron to seek early parliamentary elections, stating to supporters that the French people had “expressed a desire for change”. He said that the nation had “given its verdict and there is no appeal”.
Le Pen, who is regarded as the front-runner in the election that Macron cannot stand in 2027, applauded his choice.
“We are ready to take over government if the French give us their trust in the forthcoming national elections,” she stated during a rally.
Out of 577 legislators, Macron’s Renaissance party now has 169 in the lower chamber. There are 88 for the RN.
Macron would nevertheless be in charge of defense and international policy in the event that the RN gains a majority, but he would no longer be able to set the agenda for home issues like security and economics.
