Pakistan Army has taken the former DG ISI Lt General (red) Faiz Hameed into custody, says TV report, quoting ISPR.
The media wing of the military stated the process of Filed General Court Martial was initiated against the former Director General (DG) of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Hameed was taken into custody in connection with the Top City housing scheme scandal, stated the ISPR.
It said: “Complying with the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan, a detailed court of inquiry, was undertaken by Pakistan Army, to ascertain correctness of complaints in Top City Case made against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd).”
“Consequently, appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd), under provisions of Pakistan Army Act.”
“In addition, multiple instances of violation of Pakistan Army Act post retirement have also been established. The process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated and Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) has been taken into military custody,” the ISPR said.
In April, the military reportedly set up a committee to look into allegations of power abuse involving the ex-head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
According to media reports, the military initiated this committee as part of a self-accountability effort, led by a current major general.
Reports indicated that the committee was established based on directives from the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Defence.
The Supreme Court, in its written order dated November 14, emphasized that the serious allegations against retired Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed, a former spymaster, must be addressed as they could tarnish the reputation of national institutions if proven true.
The court’s order stated: “These are allegations of a very serious nature, which, if substantiated, would certainly damage the standing of the federal government, the military, ISI, and Pakistan Rangers; therefore, they cannot be ignored.”
Top City, a private housing project, had accused the former ISI chief of staging a raid on the offices and home of its owner, Moeez Khan.
In November 2023, the Supreme Court directed the housing society’s owner to approach relevant authorities, including the defense ministry, to resolve his grievances against the former spymaster and his associates.
The newly formed inquiry committee is expected to compile its findings into a report and submit it to the appropriate authorities, according to reports.
In March 2023, then-Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah mentioned that an investigation was ongoing against the former ISI chief and his brother for alleged corruption and illicit asset accumulation.
In March 2024, a court in Rawalpindi sent Najaf Hameed, the ex-spymaster’s brother and a retired naib tehsildar, to Adiala jail for a 14-day judicial remand.
Najaf, along with other accused, had sought pre-arrest bail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in Rawalpindi.
The FIR claimed that the former minister for mineral resources, Hafiz Ammar Yasir, had acquired properties worth billions of rupees through benamidars.
