Mohammad Nazir Junior, a former Pakistan Test cricketer and esteemed umpire, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.
Noman Nazir, junior’s son, confirmed the news announcing the loss of the cricketing legend. Nazir had been in critical condition for the past week and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital before his passing.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, expressed his condolences over the loss of Nazir Junior. Naqvi paid tribute to the remarkable services of Nazir for Pakistani cricket.
“May Allah grant eternal peace to the soul of the Nazir and shower his blessings on him”, Naqvi said. He also prayed for the patience and strength to Nazir’s family in this difficult time.
Many other influential figures including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, and Federal Privatization Minister Abdul Aleem Khan offered their condolences over the death of Nazir. They all praised the late cricketer’s contributions to the sport.
Nazir Junior was a remarkable spin bowler. During his career, he appeared in 14 Test matches and four One Day Internationals (ODIs), claiming a total of 37 wickets.
One of his most notable achievements was becoming the first-ever spinner to take seven wickets in the first innings of his debut Test.
After retiring from Pakistani cricket, Nazir turned to a career as an umpire. As an umpire Nazir officiated in 15 ODIs and five Test matches.
Nazir always guided the emerging cricketers and served as their mentor.
