Zafar Iqbal, the ex-Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail, who was detained on charges of allegedly assisting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan during his time in custody, has now been released.
The sources said that Iqbal was arrested on August 13 for investigation into his suspected involvement in supporting Imran Khan while the latter was incarcerated at Adiala Jail.
After undergoing several days of interrogation, he was released and returned to his home near Adiala Jail late last night.
The investigation has since expanded, with authorities now probing two additional jail officials.
Alongside Iqbal, an Assistant Warden has also come under scrutiny for their possible roles in facilitating Imran Khan.
Both individuals had reportedly been staying close to Muhammad Akram, another former Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail.
On August 14, Akram was also taken into custody, accused of passing messages and offering assistance to Imran Khan during his imprisonment. Akram had served in various roles at Adiala Jail for over 15 years.
Challenging Akram’s detention, his wife has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court and asked the court for his release.
She said there has been no information regarding her husband’s location since August 14 despite a formal complaint lodged with Sadar Bairuni Police Station.
She said no formal charges have been brought against him.
The court had sought reply from the respondents and had adjourned hearing until August 20.
