The first Super Blue Moon of 2024 will be visible in Pakistan tonight at 11:26 PM, according to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).
This rare astronomical event will showcase a moon that appears larger, brighter, and more radiant than usual.
SUPARCO also revealed that three additional Super Moons will grace the sky in the coming months, with the next ones occurring on September 18, October 17, and November 15.
What is a Blue Moon?
Contrary to what the name suggests, a “Blue Moon” does not mean the moon will turn blue. The term originates from the 19th century when, following a volcanic eruption, the sky took on an unusual color, causing the full moon to appear bluish. This phenomenon gave rise to the term “Blue Moon.”
There are two types of Blue Moons: Seasonal Blue Moon and Monthly Blue Moon. A Seasonal Blue Moon refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons, while a Monthly Blue Moon refers to the second full moon that occurs within a single calendar month.
On August 19, the moon will rise at a distance of 226,000 miles from Earth and will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than its usual size.
This month’s Super Blue Moon is a special event, as the next occurrence won’t be until 2037. However, skywatchers won’t have to wait long for another Blue Moon, as a Seasonal Blue Moon is expected much sooner.
Super Moons will brighten the sky for four consecutive months in 2024 as it will appear during the upcoming months including September, October and November.
