Anchorperson Orya Maqbool Jan was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Lahore for posting on social media about the Mubarak Sani case, according to his lawyer.
Jan was taken into custody by the FIA’s cybercrime department and held at its Gulberg office, according to advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq. He will appear before the judicial magistrate today.
“We will make compelling arguments; the FIA lacks authority in this matter,” attorney Ashfaq said. “The details of the first information report (FIR) are not being provided to us.”
The Punjab government is arguing before the Supreme Court today (Thursday) against the court’s July 24 ruling in the Mubarak Sani case.
The petition asked the Supreme Court to reexamine its ruling from February 6th, which said that public order, morality, and law govern the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion and its practice.
The plea was filed on Saturday through the Punjab prosecutor general, and it was immediately scheduled for hearing before a three-judge bench that included Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.
The application states that a number of prominent religious figures and lawmakers have asked the federal government to petition the supreme court to point out specific parts of the ruling that need to be amended.
