Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman refused to support the government over constitutional legislation for extension of the judges’tenure, the media reports said on Saturday.
“We can only think about constitutional amendments support when we receive the copy of the proposed amendments,” a local TV reported while quoting discussions between JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazl and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that took place on Friday night in Islamabad.
Maulana Fazl said they would not support the government over legislation to extend age limit of the judges of the higher judiciary.
However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked Maulana Fazl to support the government.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence in Islamabad, and asked him for support.
Maulana Fazl, however, directed his party leaders on Friday that they should stay away from casting votes for constitutional amendments.
It may be mentioned here that the government is deliberating to establish a new constitutional court with a new chief justice.
