England’s forthcoming Test tour of Pakistan in October may not be aired in the UK, since no broadcasters have bid for the rights.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) submitted a tender last month, but there have been no offers, increasing fears about a possible TV blackout. The series will begin on October 7 in Multan.
According to reports, Sky Sports, which aired England’s final Test series in Pakistan in December 2022, has told the PCB that it would not be submitting a proposal this year. Additionally, TNT Sport has chosen not to engage in talks.
Notably, the PCB has shifted from working with international companies like IMG or Pitch International to selling international broadcasting rights by hiring a local marketing agency. Previously, these businesses were able to negotiate last-minute tour prices.
For almost 30 years, Sky Sports has been the exclusive broadcaster of England’s international Test matches; but, as of late, the channel has reduced its coverage.
Major events including as the World Cup in Pakistan next year and England’s home series are now of utmost importance to the network.
One of the main justifications for this adjustment is the high prices and poor subscriber engagement during football season.
While it has acquired the rights to other Test series in Australia, India, and New Zealand, Warner Bros.-owned TNT Sport has not expressed any interest in the venture. There’s a more cautious attitude shown by recent cuts and choices not to extend accords, like European rugby.
UK cricket fans could be dissatisfied if a broadcaster doesn’t come forward. This highlights the difficulties in sustaining Test cricket’s audience, following low attendance in England’s most recent Test match against Sri Lanka.
