The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday finally officially recognized 39 members of the National Assembly as part of the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
A spokesperson for the commission said that the notice is now posted on its website.
“In accordance of the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, dated July 12 2024, the following returned members against general seats of the National Assembly are declared to have been returned as candidates of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI),” the notice stated.
The electoral watchdog issued a press statement following the highest court’s ruling in favor of PTI, reaffirming its resolve to follow the court’s order while directing its legal staff to quickly identify any implementation roadblocks.
The governing body said, “The ECP continues to perform its duties in accordance with its constitution and the law, without succumbing to any pressure.”
The majority decision of the supreme court nullified the March 25 ruling of the Peshawar High Court and ruled that the March 1 order of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was unconstitutional, without legal standing, and had no legal significance.
The supreme court ruled that a political party’s constitutional and legal rights to run candidates and participate in elections are unaffected by the removal of an election symbol, while the ECP is obligated by the constitution to act, interpret, and apply all statutory provisions appropriately.
