Donald Trump’s election victory, is certified by congress, today, which will now set the stage for a historic political comeback.
Four years ago, when a mob he incited overran the US Capitol, this scene couldn’t be more different.
In the 2021 insurrection, Trump’s supporters had fanned with baseless claims of voter fraud. It resulted in his imprisonment during the campaign. Their efforts were aimed at stopping his loss to Joe Biden from being officially certified as such.
Trump, now 78, was re-elected in November. Although, though a strong winter storm is affecting much of the nation, the event is anticipated to go well today.
The certification was referred to by Trump on Truth Social as a “big moment in history.”
Furthermore, the prosecutors dropped charges against him after his election. This incident marks the end of efforts to hold him accountable for the Capitol violence.
Almost 900 of the rioters who pleaded guilty to federal counts ranging from trespassing to assaulting police have been pardoned by Trump. He has called them “hostages.”
But, Joe Biden called for pride in democracy’s resilience and denounced efforts to downplay the bloodshed of 2021.
Biden denounced efforts to alter what happened that day in an opinion piece, writing, “We cannot accept a repeat of four years ago.”
The certification will be overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, who, like Mike Pence in 2021, will acknowledge both Trump’s victory and her own loss.
Although, lawmakers have occasionally contested election results during certification in the past, in 2021 more than half of House Republicans raised an objection.
Democratic leaders are not anticipated to challenge Trump’s victory this year.
Fight like hell
In a fiery speech, Donald Trump encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell.” This appeal that culminated in his impeachment for inciting the violence at the Capitol.
Today’s events ushered in a new chapter in American politics, notwithstanding the psychological toll inflicted by the rebellion.
