While contenders for the presidency are occupied with drawing support from around the nation and voters, a fresh investigation has been initiated against former US President Donald Trump.
Democrats in the Senate have opened an inquiry into allegations that Donald Trump promised US oil firms that he would undo President Joe Biden’s climate measures in exchange for their backing in his presidential run, CNN reported.
The Senate Finance and Budget Committee leaders released a statement on Thursday announcing the probe.
Legislators have also written to the nine major oil companies, which include Chevron and ExxonMobil.
The probe is a reaction to a report published earlier this month by The Washington Post that described the details of the April Mar-a-Lago fundraiser.
A citizen voiced their displeasure with the climate change regulations. Trump allegedly responded by promising to remove rules in exchange for a $1 billion donation.
The 77-year-old allegedly requested $1 billion in exchange for Joe Biden’s climate plans to be reversed in the letter demanding details.
Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island released a statement stating, “Time and time again, both Trump and the US oil and gas industry have proven they are willing to sell out Americans to pad their own pockets.”
According to CNN, Karoline Levitt, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, “President Trump is backed by people who share his vision of American energy supremacy to protect our national security and bring lower the cost of living for all Americans.”
