Democratic representatives Rashida Tlaib, Andre Carson and Ilhan Omar have been re-elected to serve congress to the US House of Representatives.
This win of Muslim candidates is remarkable as it strengthens the Muslim representation in American politics.
According to U.S. media Rashida Tlaib achieved a win in Michigan, earning 77.13% of the vote. Talib is a well-known Democratic figure. She is recognized for her advocacy on social justice and immigration. Now she will continue to represent Michigan in the House of Representatives.
Andre Carson is also re-elected, marking his ninth term in office. He is a Democratic congressman from Indiana. Carson has served Indiana for many years with key focus on education, public safety and economic growth.
Ilhan Omar also won in Minnesota’s Fifth District, securing 76.37% of the vote. Omar, a Somali-American, retook her seat for a third term in Minnesota. She is one of the first Muslim women in Congress. She is known for championing progressive issues such as climate policy and healthcare reforms.
It is pertinent to note that Tlaib and Omar are both members of the informal group of lawmakers known as “The Squad”. This is made up of progressive members of Congress including Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and many other influential figures.
