Islamabad district and sessions court on Thursday rejected the pleas asking suspension of the sentence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the iddat case.
The PTI fiercely disagreed with the decision, labeling it “absolutely ridiculous,” and its leaders protested outside the Adiala prison, where the court was erected to protect the former prime minister.
Additional Session Judge Afzal Majoka made the announcement of the verdict today. The hearing on the central petition pertaining to the nullification of their conviction is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2.
In February of this year, the PTI founder and Bushra received seven-year prison sentences each after a trial court ruled that their nikah was fraudulent in response to a motion filed by Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, to have the couple’s marriage declared unlawful.
On January 16, 2024, both of them was indicted in the iddat case. Following a fourteen-hour trial in the Adiala Jail, the trial court postponed rendering a decision on February 2 and sentenced Imran and Bushra to seven years in prison on February 3.
