The Kurram district witnessed a relatively calm weekend as ceasefire emerged between rival groups who were engaged into clashes for 11 consecutive days.
As per reports, ceasefire was implemented by the district administration which also deployed security forces in the region. However, even after ceasefire two individuals sustained injuries in Upper Kurram on Sunday, reports say.
An intense clash between the tribe rivals of Kurram arouse after the gunmen attacked passenger vans of opposing group on November 21, resulting in 43 fatalities. This incident triggered a series of reprisal attack in which 118 lives were lost while hundreds sustained injuries over the course of 10 days.
After the 10 days of these retaliatory attacks a government delegation intervened, successfully negotiating a week-long truce, which was later extended by three days.
Officials set the ceasefire across both Upper and Lower Kurram. Security personnel have been stationed in trenches in sensitive areas such as Khar Kalay, Balesh Khel, Sangeena, Irfani Kalay, Jalamy, Morghay Cheena Chadrewal, Alizai in Lower Kurram and Ghozgahri, Matasangar, Maqbal, Gidu, Pewar, and Kunj Alizai in Upper Kurram.
However despite the deployment of security forces and enforcement of ceasefire, tensions remain high in the region. Armed individuals from both factions still occupying trenches are periodically targeting each other.
Officials reported that the situation in Upper Kurram remains precarious, with the recent injuries in Pewar highlighting the fragile peace.
