The leader of the BNP-M, Akhtar Mengal, remained opposed to the amendments, saying his party would not support them unless the sons of party senators Naseema Ehsan and Qasim Roonjho, who were reportedly kidnapped by the government, were freed.
After his discussions with Fazl and Bilawal, Mengal spoke to the media in Islamabad and bemoaned the fact that MPs were keeping the constitutional modifications “kept secret.”
“We’re getting various versions from different parties, and the administration has kept these modifications hidden from the public,” he stated.
“However, who is the person in charge of these amendments?” the head of the BNP-M asked. “Is the opposition, the coalition, or the administration to blame? Or have the elements always posed a danger to the Constitution?”
Mengal said, “We have never supported an amendment like this and we will not support this.” He continued by saying that his party was a member of the same opposition coalition as the PTI and that “no matter what number of amendments there are, we are going to examine them and decide on them, but only after our people are home.”
“Neither the prime minister nor the deputy prime minister provided me a copy when I inquired what the revisions were. Threats and intimidation have been directed against two of our senators.”
“During General Musharraf’s time, we did not participate in politics at gunpoint,” I remarked. We also won’t do it right now.
