A powerful art installation by French artist James Colomina has emerged in downtown Barcelona, Spain, urging an end to the conflict in Gaza and a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Titled “The Children of Peace,” the poignant display features two red-painted statues of children, one wearing a Jewish kippah and the other a Palestinian keffiyeh, holding hands in front of a white canvas. This canvas showcases a heart symbol filled with red handprints, symbolizing the collective call for peace.

The message resonated deeply with onlookers. Renee Sanchez, a 67-year-old passerby, expressed the sentiment of many: “This is asking for peace between the two peoples. That’s what we all want. Let everyone live their lives and forget about so much hatred.” Colomina, known for his impactful street art, chose Barcelona for its global reach, hoping his message would “shine out to the world.”
While the installation stood for only four hours before being removed by construction workers, its impact was undeniable.
Colomina’s work is not new to making bold statements. His signature red statues of Russian President Vladimir Putin riding a toy tank have appeared in playgrounds worldwide, serving as stark reminders of the consequences of war.
“The Children of Peace” may have been temporary, but its message – a plea for understanding and unity – carries a lasting significance. It serves as a reminder that even amidst divisions, the voices of those yearning for peace can resonate strongly, reminding us of our shared humanity and the collective desire for a world free from conflict.
