At a time when Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz is under fire for wearing a police uniform, President Zardari’s daughter Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari has commended her actions.
According to DailyPakistan.com, Bakhtawar showed her support in a social media post, writing, “Very good, equal representation of women in the police force is commendable.”
Maryam Nawaz came under fire on Thursday for donning a police uniform during the passing out parade at the Police Training College in Lahore. While some admired her appearance, others rejected it as staged.
Shortly after the event, a lawyer filed a petition in a Lahore court, alleging that Maryam Nawaz should face charges because she was not authorised to wear the police uniform as neither a government official nor a police officer.
In reaction, the Punjab Police came up to defend the Chief Minister’s actions. In a statement released later that evening, they declared, “According to the ‘Punjab Police Dress Regulations,’ the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is entitled to wear the police uniform. This has been highly welcomed by police officers, who see it as a good demonstration of solidarity. The Central Police Office has received hundreds of communications from police officers applauding this action.
Female police officers are commemorating the occasion and have uploaded several photos of Madam CM Punjab in uniform. The Punjab Police is dedicated to strengthening the law and order situation and continuing counter-terrorism measures across the country, as commanded by Madam CM in a following meeting at the Police Training College Chung in Lahore.
