Australia, who are unbeaten in the T20 World Cup, defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs in a rain-soaked match that witnessed fast bowler Pat Cummins claim a hat-trick and David Warner smash a half-century.
Recalled with fellow bowler Josh Hazlewood following his rest against Scotland, Cummins’s three-wicket flurry assisted in holding the South Asians to 140 for eight, a total that was eventually cut short by rain.
The Duckworth-Lewis system ensured victory.
At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Australia was 100 for two after 11.2 overs when the match was called off. Glenn Maxwell was at 14 not out and Warner was at 53 not out.
Test and one-day captain Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah for two, had Adam Zampa catch Mahedi Hasan for a duck at deep third man, and then had Hazlewood catch Towhid Hridoy for 40 when the batsman scooped the ball to him.
In the middle overs, spinner Adam Zampa took 2-24 to put Bangladesh under pressure, while Pat finished with 3-29 from his four overs.
After overcoming a hamstring issue, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said on the day of the game that he was able to bowl, but he left the spare overs to Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.
However, Marsh’s bad form at the bat persisted as Rishad Hossain, who claimed both Australian wickets, bowled Travis Head for 31 and got Marsh out lbw for one.
