The Punjab government has requested the assistance of the Pakistan Army and Rangers in Islamabad and Lahore.
The decision came forward to prevent rallies by supporters of the Former Prime Minister and Founder of Pakistan Tareek-e-Insaf Imran Khan, amid rising tensions.
A notification has been issued detailing the army’s deployment rules. During a meeting of the Special Committee for Law and Order of Punjab, officials approved the army’s involvement to ensure security and manage law enforcement in key cities.
General Headquarters (GHQ) and all Corps Headquarters in Punjab have received an official notification.
The Pakistan Army will secure foreign delegations arriving for the SCO Conference and assist civil armed forces and police in Islamabad. The army deployed in Lahore will manage protests and ensure the city’s security.
Local army commanders, in consultation with police authorities, will determine the specific deployment locations. In emergencies, army personnel will have the authority to open fire.
In addition to securing the SCO conference, the army will maintain law and order in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The Punjab Home Department has indicated that army personnel might also provide security in Attock and Rawalpindi during the conference.
