Actor and model Areeba Habib has called for greater acceptance and tolerance toward minorities in Pakistan after facing social media criticism for celebrating Diwali with her Hindu friends.
In a candid conversation with fellow actor Ushna Shah, Areeba Habib addressed the online backlash she received for sharing pictures from a Diwali celebration hosted by renowned Pakistani designer Deepak Perwani.
Responding to the criticism, the Jalan star highlighted the importance of mutual respect and inclusivity. “Our country is home to diverse communities, including Christians and Hindus, who often join us in celebrating our festivities,” she said. “Deepak, for instance, attends our Iftar gatherings, even though he doesn’t fast.”
Areeba emphasized the importance of supporting minority communities who may not have their extended families nearby. “They consider Pakistan their home, and celebrating with them is a way to share their happiness,” she said. She added that she also enjoys celebrating Christmas with her staff, including putting up a Christmas tree.
She further clarified, “Yes, I am a proud Muslim, Alhamdulillah, but above all, we are human. Joining their celebrations doesn’t mean compromising our faith; it’s simply about sharing joy and fostering harmony.”
Areeba also urged parents to instill values of acceptance and empathy in their children, emphasizing that embracing diversity strengthens societal bonds.
Her remarks come as a powerful reminder of the need for unity and respect in a multicultural society, encouraging individuals to rise above prejudices and celebrate humanity.
