Animal rights activists have defaced King Charles’ first completed official portrait, commissioned by Jonathan Yeo following his coronation in May 2023, at the Philip Mould Gallery in London.
On June 11, supporters from the group Animal Rising affixed posters inspired by Wallace and Gromit to the dramatic portrait. They overlaid the King’s face with Wallace’s character and included a speech bubble decrying animal cruelty on RSPCA farms, aiming to draw attention to their recent report.
The report, released on June 9, alleges “cruelty and suffering” on farms affiliated with the RSPCA Assured program, prompting Animal Rising to call on King Charles to suspend his patronage until reforms are made.
The fiery red portrait, measuring 8 ½ by 6 ½ feet, has been on display at the gallery since May 16 and was scheduled to be exhibited until June 21.
