Mohammed Al Bashir, an opposition figure formerly affiliated with Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS), has reportedly been assigned to lead the establishment of a transitional administration in Damascus after the collapse of Bashar Al Assad’s regime, as per Arab media reports.
Once the head of the Salvation Government, an HTS-aligned entity opposing Assad, Al Bashir is now expected to steer Syria towards political reform and prepare for upcoming elections.
This move signifies the most profound political change in Syria in more than fifty years, according to statements from two opposition representatives.
Al Bashir, a native of Idlib province born in 1983, holds an engineering degree in electrical and electronic communications from Aleppo University, as highlighted in a profile released by the Salvation Government.
Details remain uncertain regarding whether HTS or the Turkey-backed Syrian Interim Government, which had previously governed parts of northern Aleppo province, has officially supported his appointment. The transitional government initiative follows the rapid advances of opposition forces across Syria, culminating in their capture of Damascus and Assad’s removal on Sunday.
