A judge of the Lahore High Court has resigned, mentioning personal circumstances as the reason behind his stepping down.
Who is Justice Shahid Jamil Khan?
Justice Shahid Jamil Khan served as the judge of the LHC for about ten years. He tendered his resignation on Friday.
“I, Justice Shahid Jamil Khan, after having served as a Judge of Lahore High Court, Lahore for about ten years, hereby exercise the option to resign under Article 206(1) of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 with immediate effect,” noted his resignation letter.
The judge said: “It was an absolute honour to hold the office, but for personal circumstances, I have decided to turn the page and start a new chapter.”
It is the third designation from the top judiciary in Pakistan in period of a month. Supreme Court judges Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi and Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan quit their jobs almost a month before.
Justice Shahid Jamil also quoted the poetry of Pakistan national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal in his resignation letter, mentioning self-reliance and liberty. Judges resignations during Pakistan election season and amid prevailing crises in judiciary and politics are topic of hot debate.
